WOODLAND HILLS -- Six political and civic leaders were honored Thursday by retired California Supreme Court Justice Armand Arabian during his seventh annual luncheon recognizing public service.

``We like to honor people who go above and beyond the call of duty, who make a difference in the community,'' said Rickey M. Gelb, co-founder of the prestigious Justice Armand Arabian Leaders In Public Service Award.

David Fleming
, a lawyer and longtime San Fernando Valley civic leader, was honored for his work with former Mayor Richard Riordan -- who dubbed Fleming ``Mr. San Fernando Valley'' -- in launching a City Charter reform effort that was approved by voters in 1999.

George Moss, chairman of the Encino-based commercial real estate firm Moss Group, was singled out for his many years of service including helping to establish the city's department of Environmental Quality under former Mayor Sam Yorty and his current work as a transportation commissioner.

Thomas Oliver, Pierce College's vice president of college development, was recognized for his work with the college's foundation and its enterprise operation -- focusing on economic development, agricultural programs and community outreach -- and for contributing to the school's growing enrollment and budget.

Former state Attorney General John Van de Kamp John Van de Kamp (born in 1936[1]) served as the District Attorney for the County of Los Angeles from 1976 until 1982, and then as 28th Attorney General of California from 1982 until 1991.  was honored for his distinguished career in public service, including as Los Angeles County district attorney from 1975 until 1983. In that role, he was responsible for new initiatives including a victims' assistance program and special teams to deal with child abuse.

Judge Joseph Wapner was honored for more than three decades of judicial work, including his most recognizable role on the ``People's Court'' TV show that ran from 1981 to 1993.

Two $1,000 scholarships also were awarded. One scholarship went to Vassiliki Iliadis, a political science major at University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  and former Louisville High School Louisville High School may refer to:

The other award went to Shivam Shodhan, a Virginia Commonwealth University Formed by a merger between the Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia in 1968, VCU has a medical school that is home to the nation's oldest organ transplant program.  student preparing for medical school, who also headed an honors math society while at Faith Baptist High School.

Since 2000, the annual luncheon has honored 35 Valley-area people and others from the region and state who have made significant contributions to the community.
