SIX LEADING PC GRAPHICS COMPANIES ENDORSE IRIS
GRAPHICS LIBRARY AS STANDARD FOR PCS
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced that leading personal computer graphics companies ARTIST Graphics, ATI Technologies, Inc., Hercules Computer Technology Inc., Matrox Electronic Systems Ltd., Metheus Corp. and SPEA Inc. have teamed with Silicon Graphics to further establish IRIS Graphics Library(TM) (IRIS GL(TM)) as a standard programming interface for interactive three dimensional graphics in the PC marketplace. The alliance is a significant step in furthering the availability and proliferation of advanced 3D graphics applications, based on IRIS GL, on PC platforms.
The six companies intend to offer support for the IRIS GL interface in their future products. They will also join Silicon Graphics in promoting IRIS GL to software vendors creating applications for PC operating environments, including DOS, Microsoft Windows(TM), and Santa Cruz Operation's Open Desktop(TM) environments. Traditionally, PC graphics applications have been written to graphics hardware standards, which were continually changing, rather than to a standard programming interface.
"The increasing power of desktop systems is making it possible for users to run sophisticated visualization applications on their PCs," said Thomas Jermoluk, executive vice president of Silicon Graphics. "The widespread availability of visual computing applications, however, requires a true 3D graphics standard which software developers can support. Today, six PC graphics companies are joining the list of industry leaders endorsing IRIS GL as that standard."
Silicon Graphics recently announced that IRIS GL is available to the industry for general licensing. In addition to International Business Machines' licensing of IRIS GL in 1988, Compaq Computer Corp., Digital Equipment Corp., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp., and Unix Systems Laboratories have endorsed IRIS GL as the strategic standard programming interface for interactive 3D graphics.
IRIS GL is the industry-standard programming interface for creating computer applications that let users visualize and manipulate color images. With more than 1,400 applications, IRIS GL has the largest base of 3D software applications of any graphics interface.
Silicon Graphics Inc. is the leading manufacturer of visual computing systems. The company delivers three-dimensional graphics, color and real-time technologies to the technical, scientific and creative computing marketplace. Silicon Graphics Inc. has offices worldwide and headquarters in Mountain View.
