SIX HOPEFULS VYING TO WIN COUNCIL SEAT; DISPUTE STALLS 14TH DISTRICT RACE.

Six candidates will battle it out for the right to fill out the term of former Councilman Richard Alarcon in the April 13 election for the 7th District council seat, the city clerk In the United States, a City Clerk is an elected or appointed official who is responsible as the official keeper of the municipal records. In some places, the Clerk may be known as the "Village Clerk" or "Town Clerk".  reported Thursday.

However, the City Clerk's Office said it had to hold off final certification in the 14th Council District because of a challenge filed by Yolanda Gonzalez after a ruling that she failed to qualify for the ballot.

That should not affect the 7th District race, where a major campaign is expected involving some of the city's better-known political figures. Alarcon, who was elected to the state Senate in November, and Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  are backing different candidates.

Alarcon is supporting health care worker Corinne Sanchez while Riordan is backing Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City , an aide to Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , D-Panorama City, and who also has the support of labor.

Another candidate expected to put on a strong campaign is Raul Godinez II, the former mayor of San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

Other candidates who qualified for the race include community college executive Barbara Perkins and government relations director Ollie McCaulley. Petitions for teacher-outreach worker Connie Acebo Rodriguez were still being checked.

To win outright in April, a candidate must get a majority vote. Otherwise, a runoff between the top two contenders will be held in June.

The other City Council race being closely watched is the 14th Council District seat being vacated with the retirement of Councilman Richard Alatorre Richard Alatorre is a politician, and a member of the Democratic Party. Alatorre has served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council. He was the first Latino to serve on the council in 23 years. .

Even the filing period has had a bizarre twist with Jorge Mancillas, who has been backed by the city unions, failing to qualify for the ballot and with Gonzalez challenging the City Clerk's disqualification of her candidacy.

Thirteen candidates have qualified for the race, which also is expected to see some major political involvement.

Riordan has endorsed Deputy District Attorney Nick Pacheco Lauro "Nick" Pacheco, Jr. is an American attorney, politician, and a member of the Democratic Party. Pacheco served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council (1999-2003). , who also serves on the elected Charter Reform Commission. Community activist Victor Griego is also expected to generate a lot of support.

The only other surprise in the election was the decision by Community College Trustee David Lopez-Lee to not seek re-election. Efforts to contact him have been unsuccessful.

Candidates who qualified in other races include:

Council District 2: Councilman Joel Wachs, marketing youth director John Spishak, business owner Kathy P. Anthony and retired city employee John Joseph Bunte.

Council District 4: Council President John Ferraro and construction supervisor Benjamin Lucas.

Council District 6: Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, Rex Frankel, no occupation listed; Realtor-environmental activist Sal Grammatico and tax analyst John Melcombe.

Council District 8: Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, attorney John Caldwell and Sandra Farrington-Domingue, no occupation listed.

Council District 10: Councilman Nate Holden, employment development specialist Scott Suh, pastor-community leader Madison T. Shockley and Marsha Brown, no occupation listed.

Council District 12: City Councilman Hal Bernson, activist Marilyn Stout, David Guzman and Charles Rubel ru·bel
