SIU AND AMA REACH 3-YEAR ACCORD

CAMP SPRINGS, Md., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Seafarers International Union (SIU) and the American Maritime Association (AMA) reached a three-year labor agreement last month which was ratified today by SIU members in specially held membership meetings.
The new contract, which goes into effect retroactively to June 16, 1993, provides unlicensed crewmembers with wage increases, extended medical coverage for the family members of Seafarers and lifts the cap on pensions. The contract allows greater flexibility of work assignments and establishes a joint labor/management approach to the issue of a safe work environment with a goal of reducing shipboard injuries.
The accord, known as the Standard Freightship Agreement and the Standard Tanker Agreement, is in effect to June 15, 1996.
Negotiations between the SIU and its contracted operators began in the spring. Talks continued through the summer. An accord was reached in late August.
Today, in concurrently held meetings at 1 p.m. at union halls around the country, the contract was approved by a vote of the SIU membership. Seafarers on vessels are voting on the contract during shipboard meetings held when their ships arrive at U.S. ports.
The SIU represents unlicensed crew members in the three shipboard departments -- deck, engine and steward.
The AMA is comprised of U.S.-flag ship operators in the liner, tanker and dry bulk cargo trades.
