SITE OF NEW ALLIANCE COLLEGE & INSTITUTE AT USX'S PORT AMBRIDGE INDUSTRIAL PARK; BUILDING NEW BRIDGES TO EASTERN EUROPE

AMBRIDGE, Pa., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In the more than 80 years the former American Bridge Division plant of USX Corporation (NYSE: X) in Ambridge was in operation, it provided the materials for the construction of some of the world's most famous bridges, including the Verrazano-Narrows and the San Francisco Bay bridges.
It is fitting then, that the former American Bridge office building overlooking the site, now known as Port Ambridge Industrial Park, will be the site of New Alliance College and The Alliance Institute to educate Polish and Eastern European students, a spokesman said today.
"The mission of the college and institute is, in a manner of speaking, to help build bridges between the U.S. and the former east block countries," said Zev M. Siegel, president of New Alliance College and Alliance Institute. "The most needed commodity in those countries is knowledge of western style business practices," added Paul Kulik, executive vice president.
In Phase I, the institute will offer non-degree courses of study until state certification is received. Siegel indicated that the school will offer courses to emigres from Eastern Europe to help them establish themselves in the United States. Further, the school will engage in joint venture management programs with American corporations currently operating or planning to open in Poland and the former USSR. Also, the school will offer programs in business and management for Americans planning to engage in business activities in Eastern Europe.
"The addition of New Alliance College and Alliance Institute represents another success in the continuing effort to help revitalize Ambridge and return to this community some of what it has given to us through the American Bridge years," said William Kiser, president of USX Realty Development, a division of USX Corporation. "The development of Port Ambridge Industrial Park is one effort to help revitalize the community, and we will continue to work toward that end."
The college and institute will be housed in the three-story, 80,000-square-foot building situated on three acres overlooking the Port Ambridge Industrial Park along the Ohio River. The college will also house a branch of the Russian Federation Trade Mission to the United States, and will be responsible for trade activities for Pennsylvania and the western United States. Negotiations are still under way with officials of Poland regarding the establishment of a trade mission at the school. USX Realty Development, which owns and manages the industrial park, will maintain on office in the building to continue marketing efforts for Port Ambridge.
The school has a relationship with Penn State University, Beaver Campus. Students will be attending classes at the Alliance facility in Ambridge and at the Beaver campus, about 10 miles from Ambridge.
Financial backing for the college was undertaken by The Founders, a non-profit group headed by Jan Wydro, one of the founders of Americares Foundation. Alliance, also a tax-exempt non-profit organization, finalized the purchase of the building and property from USX Realty in December, and has engaged S. Robert Kimball & Associates to develop plans for renovation of the 90-year-old building into classrooms and administrative offices.
The building is located in a residential area adjacent to the 115-acre park. Nearly two-thirds of the 1.3 million square feet of space of the park is occupied by WorldClass Processing, a steel processing firm; Pittsburgh Intermodal Terminals, a transportation and warehousing company; Ivor J. Lee, a manufacturer of equipment used in air reduction; and Federal Pipe and Steel Company, a steel processor and warehouse.
Since 1986, USX has invested approximately $10 million in the development of Port Ambridge, in addition to approximately $5 million of public funds.
