, one went under the second baseman's glove and one never got past the shortstop. But all of the Dodgers' 10 hits were singles.

In a game that didn't have much aesthetic beauty, the Dodgers grinded it out and, fittingly, won on a sacrifice fly as they edged Washington 5-4 on Monday night in front of 46,944 at Dodger Stadium     [ .

The Dodgers didn't turn in a masterpiece, especially considering the Nationals feature a dreadful offense and a mediocre pitching staff. Dodgers starter Derek Lowe Derek Christopher Lowe[1] (born June 1, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan)[2] is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He throws and bats right-handed. , brilliant in his past two outings, had an uneven effort and allowed three home runs but stuck around long enough to benefit from a sixth-inning rally.

Ramon Martinez's run-scoring sacrifice fly capped a three-run sixth inning and gave the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. Martinez's single was preceded by four Dodger singles, including James Loney's tying hit.

Juan Pierre Juan D'Vaughn Pierre (born August 14, 1977 in Mobile, Alabama), is a professional baseball center fielder who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He bats and throws left-handed.

"Everybody seems like they're pulling together and getting on base," Martin said. "We don't have a lot of big power hitters so we have to get some guys on base and fight our way to some runs."

There were no dramatic blasts, only a series of line drives that took Lowe off the hook. Handed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Lowe promptly gave it back.

Dmitri Young Dmitri Dell Young (born October 11 1973, Vicksburg, Mississippi) is a Major League Baseball player. He is the starting first baseman of the Washington Nationals. His nickname is "Da Meat Hook.  led off the second inning with a home run, Austin Kearns singled and Wily Mo Pena hit a home run to turn the Dodgers' lead into a 3-2 deficit.

"It was a little disappointing to get a lead and give it right back," Lowe said. "No doubt, we're in a tough situation and we have to win pretty much every series from now on."

Ryan Zimmerman's fifth-inning solo home run pushed the Nationals' lead to two runs, but the Dodgers were able to mount a sixth- inning rally that began against Washington starter Mike Bacsik.

Jeff Kent, hit in the head by a fastball Sunday, led off with an infield hit, on a ball bobbled by shortstop Felipe Lopez. Kent moved to third on a single to right and scored when Martin singled to center.

Martin's hit chased Bacsik, who was charged with five runs in five-plus innings, but reliever Jesus Colome fared no better. Loney tied the score with a single and Martinez's sacrifice fly gave the Dodgers the lead. Martinez has driven in at least one run in each of his past six games.

Lowe (11-11) was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the sixth but lasted long enough to earn his third consecutive win. Lowe allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings, walked one and struck out five.

In a way, Lowe deserved the good karma. The Dodgers scored two runs or fewer in nine of Lowe's 11 losses this season.

"I guess the baseball gods were paying him back a little," manager Grady Little said. "He made a couple mistakes early but he stayed in there for six innings and allowed us to win the game."

The Dodgers were able to rest setup men Jonathan Broxton and Joe Beimel. Mark Hendrickson worked a perfect seventh inning and Scott Proctor stranded the tying run on second base in the eighth inning. Takashi Saito pitched the ninth inning for his 35th save in 38 chances.

"Hopefully we can build on these last two games and play with some purpose," Lowe said.

This hasn't been the kindest month for Bacsik (5-8), who allowed Barry Bonds' 756th home run Aug. 7 then, five days later, went just four innings in a loss to Arizona.

Rafael Furcal opened the first inning with a walk and moved up when Pierre popped a bunt over the head of Zimmerman, who was drawn in at third base. One out later, Furcal furcal /fur·cal/ (fur´k'l) shaped like a fork; forked.
