SIMI VALLEY RUNNER QUALIFIES FOR STATE, PROVES COACH RIGHT SOPHOMORE SECURES FINAL BERTH WITH MASTERS MEET PERFORMANCE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

NORWALK - It wasn't until Anna Sperry finished fifth in the girls' 1,600 meters in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century.  on Friday night that the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  sophomore became the first female runner in school history to qualify for the state track and field championships.

But for Simi Valley coach Roger Evans

, it was evident that Sperry was state-meet bound in midseason.

He mentioned it briefly to Sperry at the beginning of the season. Before the Southern Section Division II preliminaries May 14, Evans asked Sperry if he should make hotel reservations for the state meet.

``I told him 'No way, I am not going to do it,' '' Sperry said.

Evans' intuition intuition, in philosophy, way of knowing directly; immediate apprehension. The Greeks understood intuition to be the grasp of universal principles by the intelligence (nous), as distinguished from the fleeting impressions of the senses.  proved correct about Sperry. He took a chance and made accommodations after she turned in the fastest qualifying mark in the prelims.

``I told Anna, 'You're going to make it to the state meet and you're going to make me scramble To encode (encrypt) data in order to make it indecipherable without having a secret key to "unlock" it. The term came from the early days of cryptography which camouflaged analog transmissions with secret frequency patterns.  for reservations,' '' Evans said.

The top five finishers advanced to the state meet along with others who beat a provisional qualifying mark.

Sperry achieved both criteria Friday. She ran 4 minutes, 58 seconds to nab the final automatic qualifying berth. She was among eight runners in the nine-competitor field to run under the provisional standard of 5:00.66.

Upon the recommendation of Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  distance coach Eleazar Hernandez - who coaches Sperry's older sister, Caren - Sperry abandoned her traditional even-pace strategy and took the initiative to push the pace. She led through the first half in 2:27 before falling back to fifth on the third lap.

``I was going for time because next week is where place really counts,'' Sperry said.

Sperry will be joined in Sacramento by Moorpark senior Jeannie Newman, who finished fifth in the 200 in 24.34, and Royal sophomore Michael Cybulski, who placed fifth in the 3,200 in a school-record 9:07.46.

Sperry's performance Friday marked the third time she dipped under the previous school record of 5:00.94 set in 1992.

She first broke the five-minute mark in the Division II prelims with a 4:58.94 time. She then ran 4:55.18 to finish second in the finals at Cerritos College on May 21.

``I thought that she had a shot at making it and running under five minutes,'' Evans said. ``She had been running well but hadn't quite fit into that category yet.''

Cybulski's biggest concern came before the race when he checked in and realized that he had left his jersey in his athletics bag. He had to sprint to the bleachers to retrieve his uniform.

Like Sperry, Cybulski was confident of achieving the provisional qualifying mark of 9:11.22. After running 4:40 for the first mile in a lead pack of six, Cybulski ran 2:15 the final 800.

``I wasn't going for the win,'' Cybulski said. ``I knew that I could qualify.''
