SIMI VALLEY FIRE CREATES `CLOSE CALL'.

 Center and west of Brandeis-Bardin Institute Now the Bradeis-Bardin Campus of American Jewish University, this Jewish retreat in Simi Valley was formerly the Brandeis-Bardin Institute. It is known for its nondenominational summer programs for children, teens and young adults. .

Hundreds of firefighters fought the blaze, including some who had been working on the Moorpark-area Shekell Fire nearby.

``It was a close call. There were firefighters all over the hills attacking the flames,'' said Jennie Ross, a nearby resident. ``They saved the houses. Our Fire Department is awesome.''

The flames broke out shortly after noon in the hills south of the valley between Tapo Canyon Road and Sequoia Avenue.

 like the ones that fanned the Shekell Fire earlier this week, some erratic winds kicked up, making it difficult to contain the flames.

By 5 p.m., firefighters said the blaze was about 80 percent contained and predicted full containment by 10 p.m. as winds shifted.

 Oatman said although the homes were threatened at one point, there were no evacuations, and firefighters were working to prevent the flames from spreading on to the Brandeis property.
