VENTURA - Police arrested a Ventura man Monday after his housemate house·mate

 reported that the 20-year-old had killed a dog with an ax.

James Pykonen, 38, rented a room in the house he shared with Javier Castelanos, said Lt. Carl Handy, spokesman for the Ventura Police Department.

Pykonen, who told police the dog was mild-mannered, later found the dog's body in a trash can In the Macintosh, a simulated garbage can used for deleting files and folders. The trash can keeps the files intact in case the user wants to restore them, but can be "emptied" from time to time to save disk space. . The dog had been hit with an ax several times, police said, and then had been set on fire.

Police found the ax and a blood-spattered white hockey mask in the trunk of Castelanos' car, Handy said.

Castelanos is being held in Ventura County Jail on $5,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned today in Ventura Municipal Court.

Adults invited to Exploration Faire

Adult participants will make collages, create bubbles and do some tie-dyeing. Events will begin at University Elementary and move to Horizon Hills for the afternoon.

University Women to present seminar

THOUSAND OAKS - The Thousand Oaks branch of the American Association of University Women ''This article or section is being rewritten at The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.  will present a seminar titled ``Putting Punch in Your Presentations'' to help women meet the challenges of the '90s.

Guest speaker Larry Caris, president of Training Dynamics Institute, has held more than 500 training programs and seminars for more than 15,000 people in the areas of management, sales, human effectiveness and team building.
