"I've always wanted us to become more involved with the community," said Weesner, 12, a sixth-grader. "A lot of veterans are lonely on Valentine's Day. This is our way to finally help the veterans the way they helped us."

Fifth-grade teacher Nancy Kanegai came up with the idea several weeks ago when she read an Ann Landers Esther "Eppie" Pauline Friedman Lederer, better known as Ann Landers (July 4, 1918 – June 22, 2002), was best known for writing the famous syndicated advice column "Ann Landers." The article referred to 1989, when Landers asked her readers to send greetings to America's hospitalized veterans through the Ann Landers Valentine Vet program.

Kanegai said the community project - unlike typical "spirit days" or on-campus fund-raisers - helped the students "look a little bit past themselves."

"Valentine's Day is a fun day for a lot of people," Kanegai said. "But for others, it can be kind of lonesome lone·some

With support from faculty and students, the young representatives only had one obstacle to overcome - finding supplies to make their valentines.

So Weesner decided to seek help from the community for her school's community project.

The youngster then happily left with bags full of construction paper, rubber stamps, doilies and paper hearts.

Student body historian Dee Seaton, said the project has made her aware of the importance of giving.

"I think this is something that will make them (the veterans) very happy," the 11-year-old said.

Ten-year-old Kristen Brown made a special effort to enclose a personal message to the veteran who would receive her valentine.

"You must be tired of sitting around in a hospital all the time," the fifth-grader wrote. "You must be so courageous, even if you don't Even If You Don't is a single released by the band Ween in 2000 on Mushroom Records. Formats

While many students understood the importance of how veterans served the country, the younger children were less aware, Kanegai said.

When Kanegai's third-grade son, Daniel, told his mom that he made his valentine for a Civil War veteran, Kanegai had to give her son a brief lesson in history.

"I had to explain to Daniel that the veteran would be more than 100 years old," she said.
