SIMI CARTOON EXHIBIT IS GOOD FOR A LAUGH.

Byline: Angela Randazzo Daily News Staff Writer

The Lewis Galleries Cartoon cartoon [Ital., cartone=paper], either of two types of drawings: in the fine arts, a preliminary sketch for a more complete work; in journalism, a humorous or satirical drawing.  Depot is a potpourri of silliness, from Disney classics to Looney Toons.

The gallery, which specializes in original and limited-edition animation and fine art collectibles, will be hosting a miniexpo from 1 to 5 p.m. today, featuring an animation demonstration by Merrie Lasky, animation archive manager for Warner Bros BROS Brothers
BROS Benefits and Retirement Operations Section (King County, Washington)

.

``People should come to find out how animation is done or how the process works,'' said Mary Ann Lewis Ann Lewis (born December 20, 1937) Senior Advisor for Hillary for President, has served as the Director of Communications for HillPAC and Friends of Hillary 2005-2007 and from 1997 –2000 as Director of Communications and then Counselor to Bill Clinton. , the gallery's owner. ``It's an eye-opening experience to see how cartoon characters are brought to life.''

Lasky has worked since 1993 categorizing and documenting the artwork at Warner Bros. The collection includes thousands of animation cels that are stored in warehouses near its studios in Burbank. While the collection includes some vintage art from the 1930s and '40s, the bulk is from the mid-'80s.

``Vintage art from Warner Bros. is rare because a lot of it was destroyed in 1969,'' said Lasky. ``We save everything now. All the cels, drawings and backgrounds are collected and stored. We have two warehouses full of stuff.''

With the introduction of computer-generated animation, the animation-cel process is being phased out and, with it, goes the end of an art form.

``CGI CGI

computer-generated animation is eliminating the cel process,'' said Lasky. ``It's becoming more of a rare art form. Within a year or two, animation will all be done by computers.''

For collectors, that may mean an increase in the value of the pieces they own, but for Lewis, animation isn't only about dollars and cents.

``I view it for the love of the art and the enjoyment it gives people,'' said Lewis. ``When adults look at a cartoon they like, their faces light up and they seem to get a little younger.''

That's one of the reasons cartoons play nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. The NonStop line was created by Tandem Computers, which was acquired by Compaq, which later became part of HP.  on the television inside the gallery.

``Coming home from school, we turned on the TV and watched those cartoons,'' said Lewis. ``As adults, they bring back those childhood memories.''
