SILVER SCREEN'S GARAGE SALE PUBLIC AUCTION OPENS UP 'HOLLYWOOD'S BACK STREETS'.

As Costume Collection, a longtime clearinghouse for the outfits of the Silver Screen, liquidates its 100,000-plus items in a mass public sale, a flood of movie threads is now available. From ``Hawaii Five-O'' shirts to spare plastic fish from ``Godzilla,'' the cavernous warehouse on Fair Avenue near the Burbank Airport boasts a plethora of movie history.

``This is the back streets of Hollywood,'' said Jeffrey Tanenbaum, founder of Remarketing Associates, the liquidation firm handling the sale. ``In these cages, everything has been in and out for years. You never know who could have worn them, so check the pockets.''

In the six-week sale, an immense number of vintage outfits will be snatched up by collectors and fashion hipsters. To urge sales onward and draw traffic into the larger warehouse sale, Remarketing has contracted with online auction site ibidlive.tv to handle roughly a third of the merchandise, including some of the high-profile items. Shoppers looking to pick up Johnny Depp's tacky-chic shirts from ``Blow'' or a young Fred Savage's geeky plaid shirts from ``The Wonder Years'' can log onto ibidlive's site each day at noon to browse the lots. And those are some of the more normal items available.

``You can't believe the underwear we have,'' laughed Chris Price Chris Price (born 30 March 1960 in Hereford) is a former English footballer who played in the right-back position and was noted for his attacking runs.

``Oh, you joke about it,'' said Tanenbaum, his eyes lighting up as he disappeared into one of the vast cages of tagged costumes and emerged with a labeled pair of black briefs. ``But look at this! Robert Downey Jr!''

Said shorts could find their way into the hands of a lucky buyer for a mere $10 if they hit the auction at the right time. The initial auction on Wednesday saw 20 items come up on the block, from 1950s evening dresses to classic denim jackets, and none left with a hammer price over $20.

Al Srulevitch, an unemployed Covina resident making ends meet by reselling vintage clothes for a profit, picked up a lettermen's jacket for $10.

``I was surprised, because I thought there'd be a lot more people interested in it,'' he said afterward. ``It would be fun to find out where it came from.''

The online auctions operate in real time, with bidders slugging it until one will bid no higher. Most bids begin at $10, but prices are expected to climb sharply for name-brand commodities like Depp's sleazy slea·zy

``I knew that the amount of Internet use goes way up during lunchtime, even though it's not supposed to, from my previous dot-com experiences,'' he said. ``We had success last year with lunchtime auctions, so we thought the timing was right.''

Even Munatones is getting into the act after seeing the wares posted on his site.

``I was thinking of going down there myself with a couple hundred dollars,'' he said. ``I could get some nice Halloween costumes for the next few years.''
