SILICON GRAPHICS OPENS NEW EUROPEAN MANUFACTURING,
 TECHNOLOGY AND SUPPORT CENTER
CORTAILLOD, Switzerland, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced the opening of the company's new European manufacturing, technology and support center in Cortaillod, Switzerland. Edward R. McCracken, president and chief executive officer of Silicon Graphics, was on hand for the inauguration of the center along with high-ranking Swiss officials. Silicon Graphics' investment of approximately $25 million (U.S.) enables Switzerland to join the handful of European countries that have a state-of-the-art computer industry.
The European center at Cortaillod will initially produce the entire IRIS Indigo(TM) RISC PC product family by using designs from Silicon Graphics and components manufactured in countries belonging to the European Community and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). All versions of the IRIS Indigo desktop system, from the entry-level system to the top performing IRIS Indigo Elan(TM) workstation, will be sold throughout Europe and in the Middle East. The manufacturing and technical support center will employ more than 100 employees.
Silicon Graphics' Swiss Country Manager Hien Pham said, "My efforts will be focused on developing Switzerland's competitive technological edge in Europe by establishing a close cooperative partnership between Silicon Graphics and Switzerland's industrial research, private and government sectors and technical universities."
"The center was designed not only as a manufacturing and technical support facility, but also as a European showcase for the technical and scientific 3D computing market," said Bob Bishop, president of Silicon Graphics World Trade Corp. "Silicon Graphics chose Switzerland because of the country's reliable, efficient, multi-lingual and quality-oriented engineering workforce. Cortaillod's proximity to all European markets makes it ideally suited for Silicon Graphics."
Silicon Graphics' IRIS Indigo RISC PC, which was launched in Europe just over a year ago, is a break-through product, providing unrivaled power and 3D graphics capabilities in a compact desktop computer. The IRIS Indigo family, which includes ENTRY, XS, XS24 and Elan Graphics(TM) versions, is the only product line to deliver 3D graphics, DAT-quality audio and video capabilities. The IRIS Indigo desktop systems include such features as true 24-bit color, workstation-class resolution, a 72 Hz refresh rate, FDDI connectivity and new graphics capabilities. IRIS Indigo is targeted for a range of market segments from CAD/CAM, molecular modeling and earth sciences to CASE, animation and publishing.
In 1986, Silicon Graphics founded subsidiaries in 12 European countries, including its international headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1989, the company began its first European manufacturing operations in Neuchatel, Switzerland, which are now being moved and expanded with the new facility in Cortaillod. Other Silicon Graphics' manufacturing facilities are in Mountain View, Calif., and in Kawasaki, Japan. Approximately half of the company's annual revenues are generated by international sales. Silicon Graphics offers its IRIS 4D(TM) workstations and servers through 24 incorporated subsidiaries and 23 international distributors.
