 SILICON GRAPHICS EXPANDS SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY LICENSING PROGRAM;
 DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORP. LICENSES IRIS INVENTOR
 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced an enhancement to its graphics software technology licensing program that will open the IRIS Inventor(TM) object-oriented 3D toolkit to the computer industry. The company also announced that Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE: DEC) will be the first company to license the technology.
 The licensing announcement means that PC and workstation vendors can license Silicon Graphics' powerful graphics software programming technology, enabling them to implement the IRIS Inventor toolkit in heterogeneous computing environments. Silicon Graphics will offer low- cost source licenses for the IRIS Inventor product. The product will be available to licensees in the first quarter of calendar 1993.
 The IRIS Inventor product is a revolutionary next-generation object- oriented 3D software development toolkit. The toolkit greatly simplifies interactive 3D application development and dramatically reduces programming time and support requirements. The IRIS Inventor toolkit's building blocks are reusable "objects" or software modules that can be dropped into an application. The availability of these ready-made objects reduces program development time by freeing developers from having to write basic hardware-dependent graphics code.
 "With the expansion of our licensing program to include the IRIS Inventor product, Silicon Graphics has put the power and functionality of the OpenGL interface into the hands of a broader class of programmers who will drive the future of 3D application development," said Way Ting, general manager of the Visual Magic Division at Silicon Graphics. "We believe the IRIS Inventor toolkit will quickly become a standard for multi-platform, object-oriented 3D programming, substantially increasing the number of 3D software applications available."
 "The licensing of the IRIS Inventor toolkit complements our strategic commitment to the OpenGL interface. Object-oriented 3D programming is an important step in improving productivity and enhancing application access to 3D technology," said Jeff Lane, director of Graphics Software in the Workstation and Servers Group at Digital Equipment Corp.
 The availability of the IRIS Inventor toolkit is part of Silicon Graphics' overall strategy to open its industry-leading graphics software technology to all computer users. By licensing IRIS Inventor along with its OpenGL programming interface and IRIS Explorer application builder, Silicon Graphics is providing state-of-the-art computer graphics technology to a broader class of customers.
