Sierra Vista Junior High School in Canyon Country welcomed a new assistant principal when classes resumed last week.

Salvador Frias, Jr. comes to the Hart District from Mojave, where he was director of secondary education for the Mojave Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  and principal of Mojave High School since 1999. He replaces Joel Nelson, who transferred to Arroyo Seco Arroyo Seco (Spanish: "dry creek") may refer to:

``Being in such a small district, I have had the opportunity to be responsible for many roles,'' Frias said.

He has worked with programs such as Safe Schools, Site Council and the Regional Occupational Program as well as athletics, technology, curriculum, master scheduling, Advanced Placement coordinator and community committees.

Frias was responsible for implementing the Advancement Through Individual Determination program at Mojave High to encourage students to pursue the most rigorous courses available to them. Three of the William S. Hart District's four high schools are implementing the program this year, encouraging students to pursue upper-level studies at four-year colleges and universities.

He was also responsible for obtaining more than $1 million in grants for Mojave schools. Under his leadership, Mojave was one of the first five schools in California to receive Digital High School funding.

He speaks fluent Spanish, and has served as a high school athletic director and football, baseball and golf coach.

In applying for the assistant principal position, Frias stressed his ``understanding of today's accountability system, an understanding of the high school environment, an awareness of community, true leadership and the desire to be the best in whatever I attempt.''

``We are delighted to have Mr. Frias join our leadership team,'' said Mike von Buelow, assistant superintendent of personnel. ``He has a wealth of experience and will add much to our school program.''
