Times' best-seller non-fiction list just a few gallops out of the gate?

OK, so it's interesting subject matter. But equally impressive is the marketing campaign. The Times ran glowing reviews about the book on consecutive weeks in early March, leading others like Sports Illustrated Sports Illustrated is the largest weekly American sports magazine owned by media conglomerate Time Warner. By the time regular folk read the work, the legend of Seabuiscuit was off and running again.

--Does the book match the hype? That's a tough one.

There's no doubt that Hillenbrand, a Thoroughbred racing writer since 1988, did her research - it's all laid out in 34 pages of notes with precise references that would impress any history professor reading a term paper. And eight more pages of acknowledgments are equally exhaustive.

Her enthusiasm for the subject is also evident. She won a 1998 Eclipse Award for an article she did on the famed equine for American Heritage American Heritage can refer to:

  • The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language

, then expanded it into this book. It's also been optioned as a movie currently in production at Universal.

But it also has spawned a Web site (www.seabiscuitonline.com) for further promotion. Whatever gets you up in the saddle.

--Local interest: Plenty of detail about Seabiscuit's romps at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar - especially his repeated attempts to win the Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses three years old and up, and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during .

--The bottom line: If it stays in the top-10 list longer than ``Tuesday's With Morrie,'' we'll genuinely be impressed.
