SIDE OUT GIRLS' PREP VOLLEYBALL NEWS AND FEATURES FROM AROUND THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY ... AND BEYOND.

BAD BREAK FOR TOLOGS

Following a four-game Mission League victory Friday at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, it appeared nothing could break the momentum of Flintridge Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also used in the Anglican Church.

That is until senior opposite hitter Jackie Beeton showed up at Monday's practice on crutches because of a broken right ankle suffered the day before.

Beeton, who received all-tournament honors Oct. 1 at the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  of Royal tournament, injured in·jure

``It was one of those freak things,'' said Beeton, who likely will be on crutches for three weeks, with her foot in a hard cast for six weeks. ``When I was up in the air (preparing to hit the ball), I had no idea where the pole was. But when I hit it, I heard a snap, and I knew right away something was wrong.''

Beeton was supposed to take a recruiting trip this weekend to Redlands and in two weeks to Bryant College in Rhode Island Rhode Island, island, United States

, but she might have to cancel one or both.

The injury forced Tologs coach Shelli Orlandini to shuffle her lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. , moving reserve outside hitter Katie Condon, a sophomore, to the right side to replace Beeton. Condon had eight kills in Tuesday's sweep of Louisville of Woodland Hills, FSH's 21st consecutive league victory.

``I didn't have time to switch our entire lineup in one day of practice, so it was easier to put in Katie in for Jackie than to worry about switching three players,'' Orlandini said.

PERFECT FIT

Lauren Wells often is told she's too big for one sport she loves and not big enough for the other. For Valencia's volleyball team, the senior outside hitter is just right.

With her days as a competitive gymnast behind her, the 5-foot-7 Wells is a vital part of a Vikings team that is looking to repeat as Foothill League champions and contend for a Southern Section title. Wells, a first team all-league selection as a junior, leads the team in kills and has been especially hot lately.

``Coaches come up to me saying, 'I'm sure a lot of people talk to you about your bigger players, but No. 33, that kid is amazing a·maze

, she really gives it everything she has. I wish I had a player like that on my team,' '' Valencia coach Ray Sanchez said. ``And it wasn't just coaches from one or two teams, there were a lot of them. Unfortunately, because of her height, I think she's being overlooked in the recruiting.''

A few East Coast schools have shown interest, but Wells is hoping to play closer to home.

She had a team-high 10 kills and five aces Tuesday in a sweep of Saugus, keeping Valencia undefeated in league play.

IN GOOD, YOUNG HANDS

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City didn't have much choice about putting its offense in a sophomore's hands.

``It was either this sophomore or that sophomore,'' Wolverines coach Jess jesse, jess

After playing last season on the freshman team, Katherine Sebastian is fitting in nicely for Harvard-Westlake, which is ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Div. III-A.

``For a first-time varsity player, she's doing an awesome job,'' Quiroz said. ``She's constantly learning.''

Among Sebastian's most impressive performances was a 42-assist display in a nonleague victory over Brentwood.

The Wolverines aren't alone in trusting youth with the pivotal position. Others in a talented crop of sophomore setters:
