) Tuesday announced that its subsidiary, Field Emission Picture Element Technology Inc. (FEPET), assisted by the International Development Team formed to develop the first HyFED(TM) display, succeeded in developing and operating a demonstration prototype of a 4 inch diagonal monochrome HyFED(TM) (see news release of Jan. 28, 1999 "SI Diamond Technology Announces the Formation of the HyFED(TM) International Development Team").

This announcement signifies that FEPET is one step closer to peaking the interest of large CRT (1) (C RunTime) See runtime library.

(2) (Cathode Ray Tube) A vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer monitor or TV. The viewing end of the tube is coated with phosphors, which emit light when struck by electrons.
manufacturers (televisions, laptops and other screens makers) to more seriously explore the technology for mass production.

The company's technology (the HyFED(TM)) combines the best properties of cathode ray tubes See CRT.

(hardware) cathode ray tube - (CRT) An electrical device for displaying images by exciting phosphor dots with a scanned electron beam. CRTs are found in computer VDUs and monitors, televisions and oscilloscopes.
(CRTs, common television tubes) and field emission display (hardware) field emission display - (FED) A type of flat panel display in which field emitting cathodes bombard a phosphor coating causing it to emit light.

A field emission display is similar to a cathode ray tube but only a few millimeters thick.
(FEDs) using FEPET's proprietary diamond/carbon films (see for example "SI Diamond eyes hybrid display" EE Times, June 8, 1998).

This technological development is a hybrid of CRTs and FEDs. The HyFED(TM) display is designed to utilize the existing CRT manufacturing base and achieves a high-quality thin display. The HyFED(TM) display has the potential to be larger, brighter, and provide higher resolution than conventional CRTs, while remaining cost-competitive with the CRT market.

Each participant in the development team was dedicated to a specific part of the program which contributed to the successful operation of the first HyFED(TM) prototype. Each team member internally funded the financial needs for their specific part of the program.

FEPET Inc. intends to license the HyFED(TM) technology to large CRT manufacturers in order to rapidly advance from concept to volume manufacturing.

SI Diamond Technology is a holding company consisting of three operating subsidiaries. The Field Emission Picture Element Technology, Inc. (FEPET) subsidiary is developing products for applications utilizing SIDT's proprietary field emission technology and is owned 95 percent by SIDT.
