Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

The year 2004 featured plenty of impressive performances from Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  high school athletes, and it should prove interesting to see if such success will happen again in the coming seasons.

The Hart High girls' basketball team got things going by advancing to the Southern Section Div. I-A championship game. Led by standout point guard Ashlee Trebilcock and backcourt mate Taylor Lilley, Hart lost to San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928.  in the Southern Section Div. I-A semifinals. B.J. Willkomm finished as the school's all-time leading scorer.

Hart (25-4) also enjoyed its best boys' basketball season since 1994. Led by Adam Rich Adam Rich (born on October 12 1968) is an American actor born in Brooklyn, New York City. He is arguably best remembered for playing youngest son Nicholas Bradford on the 1970s television drama Eight is Enough  and Brandon McQueen, the Indians advanced to the Southern Section Div. Canyon's girls' soccer team (15-4-3) came through with another fine season, advancing to the Southern Section Div. II quarterfinals. The team might have stuck around longer, but high-scoring Nini Loucks (schedule conflict) wasn't available during a season-ending loss to top-seeded Arcadia. Another key player, McKenzie Hill, was ill during the last game.

Valencia's girls' soccer team (21-4-3) also advanced to the Div. II quarterfinals. But after winning most of its games with great defense, Valencia learned what it was like on the other side, managing just two shots on goal in a 3-0 loss to Buena of Ventura.

Valencia's boys' volleyball team (29-2) won the Southern Section Div. II championship for the second year in a row, and Tony Ker earned Daily News Player of the Year honors for the second time. Other key players were Ryan Dean, Ted Goetz and Davey Rowley.

Local baseball teams performed especially well. Santa Clarita Christian (17-6) won just two of its first seven games but eventually won the Southern Section Div. VI title in Irvine with a 9-6 victory over favored Joshua Springs of Yucca Valley. Freshman Auggie Detres pitched six strong innings to earn the win and also went 3 for 3 with three stolen bases. Teammate Stephen Mercier earned section Player of the Year honors.

Also in baseball, Hart, Valencia and Saugus impressed.

At the preceding Southern Sections Master's meet, Canyon's Alisha Thompson qualified in the high jump, then Lauren Walker had a personal record by 19 seconds to finish second in the 3,200.
