SHOWDOWN ONE FOR THE DOGS.

The 17th annual Gundog Showdown will be March 12 at the Prado Dog Training Area.

The San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Chapter of Quail Unlimited sponsors the event, in which upland game hunters have a chance to keep their dog's skills sharp.

The trial will feature planted Chukar chukar

Popular small game bird (Alectoris chukar), a species of partridge. Stocked in many countries, it is native from southeastern Europe to India and Manchuria. It has a brown back with strongly barred sides and a black-outlined whitish throat.
 in the Prado fields. Hunter-dog teams will be scored based on time and shells expended to shoot and retrieve three birds. A second run is available if there is time and birds available.

The cost is $65, $60 for Quail Unlimited members and $50 for reruns. There is a $10 park entrance fee. Competitors must preregister pre·reg·is·ter

Coronado is across the bay.  caught a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 25 pounds, 10 ounces to win the EverStart Series Western Division event on Lake Havasu.

Anglers faced chilly, rainy conditions. Meyer was the only angler to consistently catch solid weights all four days of the event.

``I was using a brown on brown jig,'' Meyer said. ``It was as simple as it gets - too simple''

--DFG hunting clinics: Hunters for game can receive insider tips through 13 clinics to be offered by the Department of Fish and Game's Advanced Hunter Education program.

The clinics are designed to help the hunter improve their chance for a successful trip. Clinics focus on the how-to phase of pursuit. Program coordinator Susan Herrgesell said the number of clinics were doubled this year because of the enthusiastic response to last year's events.

--DFG at Hall show: The Department of Fish and Game will again return to the Fred Hall outdoor show, issuing licenses and answering questions.

They will man a booth at the Fred Hall Outdoor Fishing, Tackle and Boat shows, March 2-6 at the Long Beach Convention Center and Arena and March 16-20 at the Del Mar show.

--Fatalities drop: Firearm-related fatalities reached an all-time low, according to a report from the National Safety Council.

The report says there has been a 54 percent decline in accidental deaths over a 10-year period ending in 2003.

Firearms are involved in less than 1 percent of all accidental fatalities, according to the report. Last year, 101,537 U.S. residents died in accidents of all types. Between 2002 and '03, firearm-related fatalities fell 13 percent and over the past seven years, firearm-related deaths among children 14 and younger decreased 60 percent. Firearms are involved in less than 2 percent of accidental fatalities among children.
