SHOW OF FORCE SUPPORTERS JOIN 24-HOUR WALK TO HELP FIGHT CANCER.Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer QUARTZ HILL - When Palmdale resident Leona Frieder was diagnosed with breast cancer more than 25 years ago, she fought it with everything she had. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with and more than 2,000 supporters participating in the 9th annual Relay For Life Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, and is now held in many other countries. The Antelope Valley Country Club team, as she stood in line Saturday to register for the survivors walk. ``There's been so much done for cancer patients, this is just so wonderful,'' she said. The event began just after 9 a.m. with the survivors walk. Cancer survivors released balloons at the beginning of their hour-long walk around the Quartz Hill High School track, and at the end they released butterflies to signify they had made it through their fight for survival. The registrants came in teams of five to 10; at least one person from each team had to be walking on the track at any time. The marathon walk is scheduled to end at 10 a.m. today. The Quartz Hill Relay for Life was one of several held throughout Southern California, in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties.
