SHOW AT EDWARDS TO SOAR FOR 2 DAYS.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - Edwards Air Force Base will showcase its past, as well as its current cutting-edge work in flight testing, when a popular open house and air show resumes in October after a two-year break.

Famed test pilot Chuck Yeager This page is currently protected from editing until disputes have been resolved. , 82, will fly a P-51 Mustang, the kind of plane he flew during World War II, as a feature of more than five hours of flight performances planned each day in the Oct. 22-23 event.

Another blast from Edwards' past will be a flight of the N9M, a smaller prototype of Jack Northrop's original flying wing. The aircraft was flown at Edwards during the 1940s.

Plans for the open house are still being developed, but base officials said they have arranged for performances by the Army's Golden Knights

The F/A-22 Raptor fighter and the B-2 stealth bomber are also scheduled for flight demonstrations.

In addition, visitors will see the Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft, the vertical-takeoff CV-22 Osprey osprey (ŏs`prē), common name for a bird of prey related to the hawk and the New World vulture and found near water in most parts of the world. , and the unmanned Predator aircraft. The U.S. Marine Corps' CH-46 and CH-53 helicopters will be on display, along with NASA's 747 space shuttle carrier and an Albatross/Sikorsky flying boat.

The Air Force's Thunderbirds flying team has already been booked elsewhere.

There will be flight performances from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Oct. 22 and 23. Admission will be free.

A one-day air show planned for October 2004 was canceled because of tight budgets and extra work for base personnel already preparing for a major inspection and a change in commanders.
