SHOT OF NOSTALGIA.

Byline: Redmond Carolipio Staff Writer

`R-TYPE FINAL'' reminds me of why I loved the '80s.

Back then, arcades used to be as common as drugstores, with shooters like the original 1987 ``R-Type'' cramping cramping

the fingers of gamers every day.

For you older players, ``R-Type Final'' is the closest thing you can get to a time machine. This is a game that comes so close to bringing you that classic arcade vibe, you'll be looking for Looking for

You see, arcade shooters in the '80s were good for several things: They were always beautiful, swallowed up your time and playfully straddled the line between fun and frustration. ``R-Type Final'' fits this description perfectly, melding some new elements to its classic side-scrolling and nearly sadistic sa·dism

Fans (or anyone who remembers the original) will find all of the original ``R-Type'' stuff in place. You still control a small space fighter with adjustable speeds - and of course, the ``force ball'' is back.

The national pastime of Ireland, it was played for many centuries before the Gaelic Athletic Association standardized the rules in 1884.  endless waves of enemies, weapon fire and unpredictable stage bosses at you. ``Final'' is even worse, because it comes at a time when gamers' reflexes are more tuned to stealth and adventure, not weaving through hails of alien flak. You will be subjected to all the gaming crutches of the past. Limited lives. Limited continues. Once you've spent all those, it's back to the beginning for you - and I mean the very beginning. No save points in this shooter. If you're going to beat this game, block off a chunk of your day - or at least surround the play area with everything you need. Like food.

While you're camping out in your dorm/office/room, you can explore some of the game's newer features. Players can now choose from more than 100 ships, each with a unique look and weapon. You start out with a handful and can unlock various star fighters as you progress through the game.

With all its fighters, weapons and pretty visuals, ``R-Type Final'' isn't trying to reshape the perception of the classic shooter the way ``Ikaruga'' did. I'd like to look at it as a pleasant (and humbling) reminder of a simpler time of gaming. Dodge, shoot, survive. People used to devote whole weekends to playing ``R-Type.''

Does this mean the time of shooters is ready for a rebirth? Not necessarily. I look back at the shooter era with a smile. It doesn't mean I think they'll dominate the market again. It just means I miss them a little. Like I miss arcades. Or the '80s.

R-Type Final was, according to Irem, the last R-Type game that would be made by them. However, in 2007, it was succeeded by R-Type Tactics for the PlayStation Portable.
