Before the crash, neighbors reported hearing an argument that stopped and restarted, then several shots, Alvarez said. The slain man was identified as Elequiel Gonzalez, 22, of Palmdale, coroner's officials said. Sheriff's deputies cordoned off 10th Street East south of Avenue R after the 10:30 p.m. Monday shooting, because the shooting apparently occurred near a market on Avenue R and the crash a quarter-mile south. When authorities arrived, they found the passenger already dead from the gunshots. The driver was taken to a hospital. Deputies said both the driver and the passenger had been shot more than once.
