 SHOPPERS THROUGHOUT REGION WILL BENEFIT
FROM GIANT EAGLE'S NEW 'SMART' PRICING STRATEGY
PITTSBURGH, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The cost of weekly grocery shopping trips will drop for consumers throughout the region who shop Giant Eagle when the chain introduces its new pricing strategy -- the "Smart Buy" program, a spokesman said today.
The program will help consumers save an average of 12 percent on the 2,000 items they buy most often.
"Smart Buy is a program that passes along savings directly to Giant Eagle customers by working with manufacturers of brand-name products to eliminate certain operational and marketing costs," said Raymond J. Burgo, Giant Eagle president and chief operating officer.
The program will be introduced to consumers throughout the region this weekend when thousands of circulars, listing many of Giant Eagle's new Smart Buy items, are delivered in the mail.
Giant Eagle is working with product manufacturers to minimize the costs associated with special mass purchasing trade arrangements and promotional activities, such as couponing.
"Our objective is to save money for the shopper by eliminating what can often be wild swings in inventory and sales due to manufacturer specials and promotions," added Joseph R. Faccenda, senior vice president-merchandising for Giant Eagle. "By maintaining everyday low prices on the items people purchase most frequently, we can more cost-efficiently manage the flow of products and pass the savings on to consumers."
Some of the categories of products covered by the Smart Buy program were displayed in "Smart Carts" at the introductory press conference. The Smart Carts contained cereal, baby food, pet food, detergents, dairy products, frozen foods, juices and juice drinks, and the 40 individual grocery products purchased most frequently by shoppers in the region.
"We did not feature a Smart Cart that represented the shopping purchases of a typical family of four," Faccenda continued. "The fact is, there is no such thing as a 'typical' family anymore. The Smart Buy program meets the demands of all of today's shoppers. Everyone wants to save on the brands they buy most -- not only on sale items or those discounted through coupon offers." Faccenda also noted that for the large percentage of two-income families today, the Smart Buy program is convenient.
"People have less time to check for special deals and clip coupons. The program will give them confidence that we're offering lower prices every day at Giant Eagle."
