It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  Community Street Fair on Sunday.

Shoppers found more than 190 arts and crafts booths and a dozen food vendors along Moorpark Road in the biggest street fair of the event's six-year history.

``It's nice to see all these smiling people from the community come out. It's a people thing,'' said Steve Goldblatt, a Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``We always manage to go home with a little something,'' Goldblatt said.

Vendor fees will benefit local charities, said Neal Scribner, who head the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club committee that organized the fair. He said he expected proceeds this year to add up to about $18,000 for such groups as the Hospice of the Conejo and Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank, as well as for scholarships to local high school graduates.

For Jenny Dalton and her mother-in-law, Carin Morgan, the annual event is a chance to spend the day together with Dalton's four children and to catch up on news from neighbors.

``This is a great way to get the community together,'' said Dalton.

With the busiest holiday season approaching, vendors decorated their booths with papier-mache pumpkins, plastic pilgrim statuettes, Christmas tree ornaments and Hanukkah menorahs.

``We prepare for this all year,'' said Judy Peters. She and three friends have run a holiday booth at the street fair for the past five years.

``This is a great fair. We meet lots of people and have lots of fun,'' Peters said.

For 10-year-old Stephen Gabrielson, the best part of the street fair was the yellow firetruck from Thousand Oaks Station 30.

``I think they're awesome because they have safety things on them and help take out fires. And there's a ladder that helps rescue people,'' he said, staring up at the 100-foot ladder that firefighters extended into the air.
