SHOPKO'S 30TH ANNIVERSARY PROMISES TO BE A "WILD" TIME
GREEN BAY, Wis., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- ShopKo Stores, Inc. (NYSE: SKO) the eighth largest discount retail chain in the country and climbing, will commemorate three decades of retailing excellence with a 30th anniversary sweepstakes celebration called "Go Wild," Sept. 13 through Oct. 31. In keeping with ShopKo's commitment to the environment, the celebration will also be marked by a donation from ShopKo to the World Wildlife Fund for the protection of endangered species and their habitats.
"On behalf of the nearly 18,000 associates of ShopKo, I'd like to thank our customers for welcoming us into their communities, for their loyal patronage, for 30 outstanding years," said Dale Kramer, president and chief executive officer of ShopKo.
ShopKo's "Go Wild" 30th Anniversary sweepstakes will award a grand prize at each of ShopKo's 111 stores: round trip airfare for four to Tampa, Fla., seven nights of hotel accommodations, admission tickets to Busch Gardens and $500 spending money.
Each store will also have a first place winner of a Sony Camcorder valued at $999, four winners of a $100 ShopKo shopping spree and 40 winners of glow-in-the-dark wristwatches. "Go Wild" winners will be notified instantly using game cards inserted into an interactive in- store display. No purchases will be necessary to play.
Along with the opportunity to win big prizes, ShopKo customers will be able to collect colorful brass and enamel pins featuring 30 wild animals. With the purchase of selected items from Sept. 6 through Oct. 31, the limited edition pins will be sold for 99 cents. With the purchase of each pin, a royalty of 10 percent will be forwarded to the World Wildlife Fund.
Elementary students in ShopKo communities will be learning more about animal conservation, endangered species and their habitats as part of the "Go Wild" 30th Anniversary Celebration. Daily class curriculum, posters and classroom materials will be provided to 555 schools by ShopKo Care Clubs.
"As with all other aspects of our business that impact ShopKo communities, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously," said Kramer. "Supporting organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and teaching our children to appreciate and protect nature is an important part of this program."
ShopKo opened its first store in 1962 in Green Bay, Wis. Today 111 ShopKo stores dot the map across 13 states, including California, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
During its 30-year history, ShopKo has become known for offering customers quality brand-name merchandise at a good value, outstanding customer service, and a convenient one-stop shopping experience. It was the first discount chain to have pharmacies and was an industry pioneer in offering comprehensive optical services. In addition, customers turn to ShopKo for ideas in home decorating; a wide selection of the latest fashions; recorded music, videos and sporting goods; and seasonal merchandise, such as lawn-and-garden, back-to-school and Christmas trim-a-tree.
Heading into its fourth decade, ShopKo carries the momentum of eleven straight years of record sales and earnings; a successful public offering on the New York Stock Exchange; and a new merchandising concept called "Vision 2000" being introduced in all of ShopKo's new and remodeled stores.
"The ShopKo of today is built upon 30 years of giving our customers more value for their money," said Kramer. "It's built on convenience, from our selection and presentation of merchandise to our professional health care services to our absolutely no-hassle return policy. It's based on greeting people with a smile and politely assisting them with whatever they need. These principles have successfully guided ShopKo up to now, and they will lead us the next 30 years and beyond."
ShopKo Stores, Inc. is a leading regional discount store chain with 111 stores in 13 states, concentrated in the Upper Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest states. ShopKo stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "SKO."
