``The three of them struggled with the individual for quite some time after he was shot,'' sheriff's Lt. Joe Hartshorne told reporters at the scene five hours after the shooting.

Sheriff's officials released little information about the shooting, which was being investigated by the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Office of Independent Review and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

The dead man's name was not immediately released. After he was subdued, he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hartshorne said.

The deputy, whose name also was not released, suffered a minor injury during the struggle. He was treated at a hospital and sent home, Hartshorne said. One of the deputies who came to his aid was also slightly injured in·jure

Deputies have been told that the car crashed after it and a second vehicle were involved in some type of road-rage incident, Hartshorne said, but investigators have not confirmed that.

Alerted by at least one 911 call, a sheriff's deputy went to look for the driver, who ran south along 30th Street West beside a housing tract.

Near Newgrove Avenue, the deputy spotted the man and stopped. The deputy and the man got into a fight, and the man tried to hit the deputy with a large rock, Hartshorne said.

The fight moved 150 feet or so into the field bordering the tract where the deputy shot the man. Two other deputies then drove up and joined in the struggle.
