Kicking off their second annual old-fashioned street fair, Jack's Shoes and neighboring merchants will give gift certificates and coupons for their wares in exchange for donations of shoes and canned goods.

The street party and sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Donated goods will be distributed to the needy by the Samaritan Center and Care and Share, two local organizations dedicated to helping the homeless and needy.

Last year, thousands of Simi Valley residents participated in the inaugural fair, organized to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Penny Pincher's, an antique mall of more than 70 antique shops, located on Valley Fair Street.

With the help of other merchants along the two-block section of the street, Penny Pincher's hopes to make the event an annual block party for the entire community.

``We're in an off-the-beaten-path sort of place,'' said Kathy Ervin, owner of the Penny Pincher's mall. ``We're a close-knit group and try to help one another. And this year we hope to help the homeless, too.''

Willa Dobbs, founding director of Care and Share, said she has worked with local merchant John Spotts of Jack's Shoes to provide good shoes Good Shoes is a four-piece English indie pop band, hailing from Morden, London. Biography

``Usually if there is a problem with food, there is a problem with shoes,'' said Dobbs. ``This is very welcome.''

The food bank and shoe drive will help bring basic needs to the families that seek out help at Care and Share. Each day, Dobbs said, she helps 20 to 30 families.

In addition to discount shopping and street sales, the fair will feature free pony rides and games for kids, demonstrations by the award-winning Simi Valley Police K-9 division and by the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.
