SHOE CARNIVAL DECEMBER SALES UP 39.1 PERCENT

 EVANSVILLE, Ind., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Shoe Carnival, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCVL) today reported sales for the five week period ended Jan. 1, 1994, increased 39.1% to $21.7 million from sales of $15.6 million during the five week period ended Jan. 2, 1993. Comparable store sales were flat for the month.
 Sales for the company's fourth quarter rose to $46.9 million, a 37.2% increase over sales of $34.2 million last year. Comparable store sales for the quarter rose 2.0%.
 For the 52-week fiscal year ended Jan. 1, 1994, sales were $157.3 million, an increase of 26.2% over sales of $124.7 million during the 52-week period ended Jan. 2, 1993. Comparable store sales increased 4.4% on a 52-week comparison.
 The company's fiscal year ended Jan. 2, 1993, consisted of 53 weeks. Sales of $127.1 million were recorded during that year, including sales of $2.4 million recorded in the additional week.
 The company also announced the opening of a new store in Athens, Ga., on Dec. 6, 1993. During the fiscal year ended Jan. 1, 1994, the company opened 18 new stores and ended the year with 57 stores in operation.
 Shoe Carnival, Inc. is a high volume, value oriented retailer of family footwear currently operating a chain of 57 stores in 15 states predominantly in the Midwest and Midsouth.
