SHIVA'S LANROVER WINS PCLAN MAGAZINE'S "BEST BUY" AWARD FOR REMOTE ACCESS; LanRover Wins on Extensive Capabilities, Security Features and Ease-of-Use.

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 1995--Shiva Corporation today announced that its LanRover/E 3.0 remote access server has been named "PCLAN PCLAN Personal Computer Local Area Network  Best Buy" by PCLAN Magazine, a U.K. technology publication.

The award, announced in PCLAN's March 1995 issue, was based on a comparative benchmark review with four other remote access servers, including Asante's NetRAS, Telebit's NetBlazer, Cayman's GatorAccess and Jaguar's Centrum centrum /cen·trum/ (sen´trum) pl. cen´tra   [L.]

The focus of the benchtest was dial-in remote access. As part of the review, all five products were compared in a table on eight features and support of three protocols (IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet. , TCP/IP TCP/IP

, AppleTalk). Shiva's LanRover supported all the protocols and was the only product that met all eight of the listed features including dial-in, dial-out, LAN-to-LAN, password protection, enforced dial-back, roaming dial-back, log-on time limit, and log-on attempts limit.

PCLAN Magazine states, "The Shiva solution to remote access is comprehensive and very easy to set up and use. Security features are extensive and the administration software is sufficiently intuitive that the manual was hardly used when setting up user profiles." The review also commends Shiva's use of Novell's Virtual Loadable Modules (VLMs), allowing the network to be dialed up from Windows when required. It notes, "At the client end Shiva is keen to see Novell's VLMs in action."

"We are extremely pleased to receive our first U.K. award," said Woody Benson, vice president of corporate marketing and North American sales for Shiva. "It acknowledges that LanRover is a leader in remote LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  access technology, both in the U.S. and internationally. Shiva is committed to the European market and will continue to set global industry standards for integration, performance, and manageability."

The LanRover/E remote access server offers complete dial-in and dial-out access for PCs running either Windows or DOS and support for multiple protocols, including IPX, IP, NetBEUI and Logical Link Control (LLC (Logical Link Control) See "LANs" under data link protocol.

). The LanRover/E ships with Shiva Net Manager, a centralized management system that monitors all Shiva devices on a network. Network security can be managed using either the Shiva Net Manager or Novell's NetWare Bindery. Data transfer performance is enhanced by LanRover's support for Novell's Virtual Loadable Modules (VLMs).

LanRover 3.0 provides true multiprotocol and multiplatform support for dial-out and dial-in, LAN-to-LAN routing for branch office connectivity, and integrated security enhancements. LanRover 3.0 is the only remote access server that supports simultaneous IPX, IP, AppleTalk, NetBEUI and LLC protocols and allows PC, Macintosh and UNIX UNIX
