SHIPMENTS OF WINDOWS NT/2000 ON POS TERMINALS TO EMEA SURGE NEARLY 20% IN 2001 ACCORDING TO IHL CONSULTING GROUP.


Led by strong shipments to smaller specialty stores and large format grocery retailers, shipments of Microsoft's Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. "Windows NT/2000 now represent 36% (up from 30% in 2000)of the total shipments to the region with Windows 9x/ME/CE having a 28% share and DOS hanging in strong at 26% of total shipments," said Greg Buzek, President of IHL Consulting Group.

According to the study, specialty stores (24%) had the largest increase in Windows NT/2000 year to year and the larger format grocery stores (20.3%) also saw a significant increase.

"There appeared to be two strong drivers of the market in 2001," added Buzek. "Smaller specialty stores waited until the last minute to upgrade their systems to accept the Euro currency and larger format food stores improved their technologies to better compete with Wal-Mart's european operations."
