SHERIFF'S PROBE YIELDS NO SUSPECTS IN BEATING DEATH OF NEWHALL MAN : MAN RECEIVED PHONE CALL SHORTLY BEFORE FATAL ATTACK.

Family, friends and mentors on Tuesday remembered Michael Vernon Michael 'Mike' Vernon A.M. (2 April 1932 – 6 November 1993) was a prominent Australian consumer activist. Vernon was born in Portsmouth, United Kingdom in 1932 to John Ernest Vernon (a writer in the Royal Navy) and Caroline Vernon (nee Clark) (later a cryptologist in the  Barnett, the 19-year-old man who died this week after he was found badly beaten in a church parking lot across the street from his home.

While sheriff's investigators provided no details, Lee said Barnett received a phone call about 2 a.m. Sunday and moments later left the family's Quigley Canyon Road home, apparently to meet someone.

The family is not sure who their son went to see, Lee said.

The young man had gone to high school with Barnett, and knew him, she said. He reported his discovery to the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station, which notified family members about 6 a.m.

``All (the family) knew was that somebody had beaten him severely, mostly to the head,'' Lee said.

Barnett was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Monday morning, officials said.

Church officials cordoned off the area where Barnett was found to allow family and friends space to leave flowers, signs and candles.

Barnett's brother left a sign that simply reads, ``I love my brother.''

Lee described Barnett as a quiet, talented artist who enjoyed oil paintings and animated drawings, which filled the walls of his room.

``Some of the faculty members are taking it very hard,'' said John McElwain, a College of the Canyons spokesman. ``For those who knew him, they're very somber.''

Barnett's artwork has been displayed at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and at the William S. Hart Union High School District office.

His parents, Robert and Regina, are also active in the schools.

His father is a coach for the Santa Clarita chapter of the American Youth Soccer Association. He is also an assistant coach for Hart High School's junior-varsity soccer and cross-country teams.
