SHERIFF'S DEPUTY INJURED IN PATROL CAR-TRUCK COLLISION.

LANCASTER - A Palmdale sheriff's deputy was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Mission Hills early Friday after his patrol car collided head-on with a pickup Pickup

``His injuries were non-life-threatening, fortunately,'' said Sgt. Jay Bluff of the Lancaster sheriff's station.

The other motorist, Donald Hemme, 52, of Lancaster, suffered moderate injuries to his left arm but declined treatment at the scene of the crash, deputies said.

Officials said Welle had just left the Lancaster station after booking in evidence and was returning to the Palmdale sheriff's station when the crash occurred.

 in the 43700 block of Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  about 3:15 a.m. when his patrol car hit Hemme's 1996 Dodge pickup truck, which had begun making a left turn into a business.

Welle was airlifted to the hospital and immediately underwent emergency surgery.

Investigators said alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the crash. They refused to comment Friday on which driver was responsible for the collision.

Sierra Highway was shut down for nearly six hours while deputies investigated the incident.
