``The suspect shot at the helicopter in the Lost Lake area,'' said San Bernardino County sheriff's Deputy Rudy Vuittonet. ``Bullets entered through the Plexiglas (canopy) into the pilot's leg and hip.''

The helicopter made an emergency landing in a dry lake bed and the wounded deputy was airlifted to San Bernardino County Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition after surgery, Vuittonet said.

A Riverside County sheriff's spokesman said the deputy, whose name was not immediately released, had worked for San Bernardino County for nine years.

Jerry Gazaway, 37, of Riverside was arrested for attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill.  of a law enforcement officer. His female passenger, whose name was not released, was not immediately arrested.

Gazaway, the driver and lone gunman, ran a roadblock, ramming a patrol cruiser in a hail of gunfire. He later rolled over a spike strip, flattening the tires on his Ford Bronco. One of the bullets hit the front windshield of the Bronco bronco: see mustang. , spewing glass debris and wounding Gazaway's shoulder.

The pair then abandoned the vehicle and fled into the creek bed to hide, said Vuittonet.

It was not immediately clear whether Gazaway got out of the truck and fired at the pilot, or whether he slowed or stopped before taking aim.

Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Don Farrar said one of the department's aircraft spotted the pair in a hilly area of Jurupa shortly before noon.

They appeared to be taking parts from a vehicle, Farrar said. When they saw the sheriff's aircraft, they fled in the Bronco, Farrar said.

Riverside County deputies chased the Bronco, which was traveling between up to 85 mph on residential surface streets to the Ontario International Airport area, where the vehicle got on Interstate 10.
