SHERIFF'S TO HONOR LOST OFFICERS WITH ANNUAL RELAY RUN.

The 24th annual Peace Officers Memorial Torch Relay Run will begin this morning at the sheriff's department headquarters in Monterey Park Monterey Park, city (1990 pop. 60,738), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a growing residential suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1916. It is a wholesale, retail, and financial services center.  and will end Sunday afternoon at the Altadena sheriff's station.

``Anyone can participate in this run, and they can run, Rollerblade or pedal bike through it,'' said Deputy Artie Thompson of the Santa Clarita sheriff's station. ``The sheriff will even jump in right at the start of the race.''

Hinkle, 33, was completing his training as a motorcycle deputy when he was killed Feb. 14 in Diamond Bar. He was the first motorcycle deputy to be killed in the unit's 10-year history, officials said.

Sheriff Lee Baca will pass the first torch of the race to Hinkle's widow, Michelle, and his co-workers from the Lomita station.

The race will also honor Mata, a 26-year-old officer who was killed Sept. 19, 2000, while responding to a call for backup assistance from officers responding to a stolen vehicle report in the Harbor area.

While en route to the call, Mata lost control of the patrol car and crashed into a cement light post. He is survived by a wife and two small children, ages 5 and 2.

The relay run is divided into 56 legs and includes five runs through Santa Clarita.

The first leg begins at 7 p.m. at San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  and Race Street; the second leg at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station; the third leg at 8:30 p.m. at Soledad Canyon and Whites Canyon roads; the fourth leg at 10 p.m. on the Sierra Highway at a 50 mph sign located about 4.5 miles south of Center Street; and the last leg at 11 p.m. at Sierra Highway and Center Street.
