The Antelope Valley Domestic Violence Council, was the recipient of an Unsung Hero award from the Greater Antelope Valley Chamber of Commerce. The award is meant to honor someone who for the most part is not recognized for the good work he does in the community. ``We did some investigating and found out, wow, it's shocking how many people go through that program,'' said Bernie Longjohn, the chamber's board chairman. The shelter serves an average of 75 to 100 adults and children during a 30-day period, and as many as 12 men a year - up from three men or so just three years ago. ``I have never felt so honored,'' Ensign said of the award. A nonprofit operation, the Lancaster shelter offers a variety of services in a 60-day program that includes child care, counseling, legal assistance, job-skills development, training in living skills, emergency housing and direction in how to file for financial assistance.
