SHELL OIL BEGINS PUMPING NATURAL GAS FOR VEHICLES IN HOUSTON
HOUSTON, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Oil Company today officially unveiled its first retail service station in Houston to dispense both gasoline and compressed natural gas for vehicles. This is the first venture by a major oil company to retail compressed natural gas directly to the motoring public in Texas without the assistance of a public utility company. The new natural gas dispenser at Shell's service station located at Interstate 45 South and Scarsdale Blvd. is capable of fueling any vehicle equipped to operate on compressed natural gas.
"The opening of this facility reflects Shell's ongoing commitment to making environmental concerns a priority in our business operations, " said Jim Morgan, president of Shell Refining & Marketing Company. "This project has the potential to be good for the environment while meeting a growing demand for compressed natural gas among fleet users."
Other previous Shell and public refueling projects have been in partnership with local utility companies. Shell currently has one CNG service station in Sacramento, Calif., another planned to open in September in the San Diego area and a fourth station that will open later this year in the New Orleans area. In addition, Shell jobbers operate three natural gas fueling stations in Lubbock and Odessa, Texas, and Lafayette, La.
"Shell believes that reformulated gasoline will be the predominant choice in meeting the nation's fuel needs. However, we recognize that fuels of all types may become components in the strategy to attain clean air standards in the most severe non-attainment cities," said Morgan.
Shell's natural gas efforts compliment its work on other alternative fuels such as reformulated gasoline and M85, a methanol/gasoline blend. In 1990, Shell introduced its reformulated gasoline SU 2000E, which currently is marketed in 10 ozone non-attainment metropolitan areas across the United States. SU 2000 is an unleaded premium gasoline designed to reduce hydrocarbon vapor and carbon monoxide emissions.
Shell markets its gasoline through approximately 8,800 branded stations in 40 states. In the Houston area, there are 203 Shell service stations.
