Hicks got his start as a professional musician in his late teens and performed around the Southeastern United States for well over the span of a decade, during which he also released two independent  to face off in the finals next week.

McPhee's friends, family and fans were over the rainbow. McPhee's mom, PeishaMcPhee, told a friend after the votes were announced that she was ``too excited to talk.''

``It's absolutely a miracle,'' said Michele Daranyi, 21, a close friend of Katharine McPhee's for 14 years. ``She'll have the film and TV career she's always wanted and she'll make an album that will work for her. Her passion is for her work.''

``Win or lose next week, I see Kat's future going the way of a contemporary Streisand,'' said James Mellon, artistic director of the NoHo Arts Center, who cast McPhee as Annie Oakley An·nie Oak·ley

In competition Tuesday, McPhee bowled over judges with a blockbuster ``Somewhere Over the Rainbow,'' which she performed seated on the floor of the stage. Longtime McPhee family friend Diane Davis said Kat would enjoy a healthy career whichever way it goes next week.

``I see her becoming a very big star,'' Davis said. ``She could record an album next week, or she could do a Broadway show, but I'd like to see her keep singing, whatever happens -- and I know she will. She's got so much going for her -- plus, a very good support system of family and friends.''

Susie Welby, a McPhee friend and her onetime vocal coach, said the ``Idol'' experience has been the greatest career launch imaginable.

``In 10 years, I'd like to see her have a shelf of Grammys and Tonys,'' Welby said after hearing that Kat was still in the game. ``She's going to be around for a while.''

Veteran hit-maker Clive Davis, the week's resident vocal coach on ``Idol,'' seemed to agree, saying the sultry, dark-eyed beauty has ``a great voice (and a) big range.''

Now in its fifth season, ``Idol'' continues to dominate the ratings, attracting 25 million to 33 million viewers each telecast. Host Ryan Seacrest said on Wednesday's show that viewers called in 50 million votes.

``Kat has something Taylor doesn't have -- she can do TV, movies and recordings,'' said Brent Braun, associate managing director of the NoHo Arts Center, where Kat co-starred in ``The Ghost and Mrs. Muir'' last summer. ``Even if she doesn't become the American Idol, she won't be one of those people where you say `Whatever happened to?' in a year.''
