Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

During its run to a fifth consecutive City Section girls' soccer title last season, El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

to one of its best women's soccer seasons, so there is only one Niki carrying the load for the Conquistadores this season as they pursue a City-record sixth straight championship.

Connolly, who has verbally committed to UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas , leads El Camino Real with 12 goals, nine coming during a six-game unbeaten streak that followed a 2-0 loss to Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary.  defeated Valencia 3-0 and tied Louisville of Woodland Hills 1-1 to secure a return trip to the Hart championship game, with Connolly contributing two goals and an assist on the day.

In last season's 2-1 victory over Hart in the final, Connolly scored a first-half goal to help the Conquistadores rally from an early one-goal deficit.

This season, Connolly - a returning All-City selection - netted both goals in a 2-0 victory over Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  in ECR's opener, and she has a goal or an assist in seven of nine games. But the senior forward credits her team's depth and unselfish play for creating scoring opportunities.

``It's not just about one player. It takes the entire team to be successful,'' Connolly said. ``As long as we continue to (have that attitude), I think we'll do really well this season.''

Last season, Walberg was the top scorer, with 23 goals, in a deep, talented lineup.

``You can't replace a player like Nikki,'' El Camino Real coach Shanna Sarris said. ``We just had to look to other players to step up their games and try to produce some of those goals that Nikki did last year.''

With Connolly and Cal-bound Oakes leading the charge, the Conquistadores are 24-1-3 since a 4-1 loss to perennial powerhouse San Clemente in the Mater Dei tournament last year. Sarris credits their leadership and experience for helping El Camino Real reach its fourth Hart tournament final in the past five seasons.

``This is probably the most focused group I've been around,'' said Sarris, who has been part of the Conquistadores' program for seven years, the past three as head coach. ``And a lot of it has to do with them. They do a good job of keeping everything in perspective.''
