The creation in 1906 of the architectural partnership of Walker & Gillette by Alexander Stewart Walker and Leon Narcisse Gillette signified the emergence of what would become one of the most prolific firms to practice during the first half of the 20th century in New York. Eight short years after its beginning, the firm would be featured in The Architectural Record, April 1914 issue, titled Variety in Architectural Practice, Some Works of Walker & Gillette. During the 1930s and early 1940s, the firm won commissions for numerous major New York institutions, including American Express, Manufacturers Trust and Bank of Manhattan. An international practice was launched with work on projects in Cuba, Argentina, Panama and France. Walker & Poor was formed in 1945, with Alfred Easton Poor a principal and Albert Homer Swanke an associate. Commissions over the next decade included the extension of the East Front of the U.S. Capitol, the James Madison Memorial Library in Washington DC, and the U.S. Customs Court Customs Court n. a federal court established (1926) to hear appeals from decisions of customs officials on classification of merchandise, duty rates, and interpretation of customs laws. The acquisition of Taylor Clark Architects in New York and George Trew Dunn in London brought the firm into healthcare design. Additional offices were opened in Paris, Sheffield and most recently Moscow. At the turn of the century, new building and major modernization project commissions were received for Mutual of America Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, also referred to as Mutual of America is a Fortune 1000 mutual company based in New York, New York.
