SHBOOM MICROPROCESSOR SELECTED AS JAVA RUNTIME ENGINE
The Webbook Is First ShBoom Customer
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Patriot Scientific Corporation Further information might be found on the talk page or at requests for expansion. (OTC OTC See: Over-the-counter. OTC See over-the-counter market (OTC). : PTSC) is pleased to announce that The WebBook Company has announced the selection of the patented ShBoom Microprocessor as the Java runtime engine for its WebBook. The WebBook Company of Birmingham, Michigan is patenting and developing an inexpensive portable computer-based device to access the World Wide Web of the Internet. The WebBook is designed around Java, an object-oriented programming language, trademarked and developed by Sun Microsystems. Java is a simpler method of executing applications and accessing information across networks such as the Internet. Volume production of the WebBook is scheduled for late 1996. The ShBoom is a highly integrated advanced 32-bit RISC processor that offers superior performance with a low system cost. The ShBoom chip employs a proprietary architecture that simplifies instruction execution, increases execution speed, provides greater design flexibility and minimizes the use of costly silicon. This architecture also incorporates many on-chip system functions thereby eliminating many expensive support chips and further lowering overall system cost. The zero-operand, 32-bit, stack oriented architecture of the ShBoom is ideally suited to operate the Java virtual machine A Java interpreter. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is software that converts the Java intermediate language (bytecode) into machine language and executes it. The original JVM came from the JavaSoft division of Sun. , executing many Java bytecodes in a single instruction cycle. The ShBoom's architecture was strongly influenced by Forth implementation concepts especially regarding operations involving stacks. Java is also strongly stack oriented resulting in the ShBoom being an optimal Java runtime environment. Charles Durett, founder and President of The WebBook Company stated "The software development strategy for the WebBook is concentrated on providing a Java optimized runtime environment. A review of the characteristics of various alternative processors strongly indicates that the ShBoom is the only reasonable choice for the role we have picked for it." Elwood G. Norris, President of Patriot stated, "We are very pleased that the ShBoom has been selected for the WebBook, an exciting application of the new paradigm of the network is the computer. We believe the ShBoom has many more applications in the areas on Internet terminals and Internet interface products. The ShBoom is the first generation of chips designed for high performance in Internet applications." Mr. Durett added, "We're looking for a volume of at least a million units through 1998 and have selected technology that will carry us there without fear of obsolescence." In addition to the ShBoom project, Patriot Scientific Corporation is engaged in developing and commmercializing ISDN ISDN in full Integrated Services Digital Network Digital telecommunications network that operates over standard copper telephone wires or other media. interface products, scientific radar sensors and sophisticated antenna technologies.
