``Secret Agent Man'' singer Johnny Rivers is returning to the scene of his early success Monday to kick off a three-night stand at the Whisky.

Rivers' first album, ``Johnny Rivers Live at the Whisky,'' was cut at the West Hollywood West Hollywood

, the singer was named Rivers by DJ Alan Freed Alan Freed (December 15, 1921 – January 20, 1965), also known as Moondog, was an American disc-jockey (DJ) who became internationally known for promoting African-American Rhythm and Blues (R&B) music on the radio in the United States and Europe under the name of Rock  in 1958. He scored his first hit in 1964 with a cover of Chuck Berry's ``Memphis'' and two years later saw ``Secret Agent Man'' hit No. 3 in the charts.

The latter song, with its catchy opening spy riff, has turned up in the recent films ``Bowfinger'' and the first ``Austin Powers'' movie.

With 13 Top 10 hits and two Grammys, Rivers keeps up a steady appearance schedule.

Joining him on stage at the Whisky will be pianist Larry Knechtel Larry Knechtel (born Lawrence William Knechtel, 4 August 1940, Bell, California) is a session musician best-known for his work with Simon and Garfunkel, The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds, Smile) and as part of the 1970s band, Bread. , once part of the famed Los Angeles rhythm section that played on many of the '60s greatest pop singles.

Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai plans to issue a 10-disc box next year.

The set will cover all areas of his career - from his days with Frank Zappa to his film scores, solo efforts and alternate takes.

``It's for fans only,'' Vai, 39, said recently. ``I can't imagine anyone who wasn't a fan going out and buying 10 albums by me all at once.''

, Vai has released a new album, ``The Ultra Zone,'' and appears at the House of Blues House of Blues (HOB) is a chain of music halls and restaurants founded in 1992 by Hard Rock Cafe founder Isaac Tigrett and his friend and investor Dan Aykroyd. It is a home for live music and southern-inspired cuisine, whose clubs celebrate African-American culture, specifically  on Dec. 18.

``My music is never played on the radio,'' Vai offered. ``It's because when radio people hear my name, they think I'm either this wacked-out guitar genius whose music is way beyond, or I'm this Mongolian shred-bender.''
