There just hasn't been anything very stirring released this year so far. At home, we're playing the just-issued David Sylvian album and the forthcoming Randy Newman disc, due June 1. Otherwise, it's back to older stuff and reissues. By early May last year, the labels has already issued Pulp's ``This Is Hardcore,'' Nick Lowe's ``Dig My Mood,'' the ``Good Will Hunting'' soundtrack, Robbie Robertson's ``Contact From the Underworld of Redboy,'' the self-titled debut from All Saints All´ Saints` 1. The first day of November, called, also, Allhallows or Hallowmas; a feast day kept in honor of all the saints; also, the season of this festival. , Madonna's ``Ray of Light,'' Mono's ``Formica Blues'' and the ``Jackie Brown'' soundtrack, to name a few. Belt-tightening is apparently the explanation in 1999. When all those companies merged earlier this year - Geffen, Island, Motown, Mercury, London and A&M - executives immediately began cutting roster and release schedules. Few of those imprints have issued anything at all so far. And as far as we know, there's not too much in the pipeline, either. Other labels are working fewer acts, perhaps rethinking the old `throw it against the wall and see what sticks'' marketing philosophy of the past.
