SHARPS & FLATS : MAJOR LABELS MOSTLY SILENT.

Byline: Fred Shuster

This is shaping up as one of the worst years for rock in recent memory.

There just hasn't been anything very stirring released this year so far. At home, we're playing the just-issued David Sylvian album and the forthcoming Randy Newman disc, due June 1.

Otherwise, it's back to older stuff and reissues.

By early May last year, the labels has already issued Pulp's ``This Is Hardcore,'' Nick Lowe's ``Dig My Mood,'' the ``Good Will Hunting'' soundtrack, Robbie Robertson's ``Contact From the Underworld of Redboy,'' the self-titled debut from All Saints All´ Saints`

Other labels are working fewer acts, perhaps rethinking the old `throw it against the wall and see what sticks'' marketing philosophy of the past.

, records aren't moving out of the stores.

Radio certainly isn't interested.

One answer that's been bandied about involves marketing new acts through the Internet.

But with all those millions of Web sites, how do you get the word out to begin with? In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"
