SHAPIRO NAMED TO GLIATECH BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 CLEVELAND, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Gliatech Inc., the neuroscience- based pharmaceutical company, announced today that Irving S. Shapiro has joined the company's Board of Directors. Mr. Shapiro is formerly Chairman and CEO of the DuPont Co. as well as a former partner at the New York law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
 "We're delighted to have someone of the stature of Irving Shapiro on the Gliatech Board," said Thomas O. Oesterling, Ph.D., President and CEO of Gliatech. "He brings a wide range of experience, both in business and in government, which represents a significant addition to Gliatech." The addition of Mr. Shapiro brings the total Gliatech Board membership to eight.
 After stepping down as partner at Skadden, Arps, Mr. Shapiro became Of Counsel to the firm in 1990. He is currently a Director of AEA Investors Inc., Pediatric Services of America, J.P. Morgan Florida Savings Bank and Ohmicron Corporation. He is also a consultant to Morgan Trust Company of Florida. He is a member of the Advisory Council of Wells Fargo & Co., Chairman of the Advisory Board of Marvin & Palmer Associates, Inc., Chairman of the Trustees of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
 Mr. Shapiro is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota Law School.
 Gliatech was formed in 1988 to discover, develop and commercialize therapeutic products based on an understanding of properties of glial cells, a major component of the nervous system.
