SGI TOP CHOICE FOR CAE APPLICATIONS.

SGI (NYSE: SGI), Mountain View, Calif., is the vendor of choice for computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications staged on high-performance computing (HPC) platforms, according to a new study of manufacturing product development users in such industries as automotive and aerospace.

For the study, leading research and consulting firm D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. (DHBA) queried a limited but representative sample of product developers about their platform preference. Of the six hardware vendors cited by respondents, SGI was the leader, with 36 percent.

DHBA's targeted investigation covered large product development groups within the North American automotive industry, a European automotive supplier and a sampling of space-science developers, exploring their positions on the use of HPC for CAE simulations. The queries sought to form a snapshot of current HPC usage and to probe user estimates of future HPC deployment over the next three years.

The most dominant applications across the companies investigated were crashworthiness simulations and occupant safety for the automotive industry, along with structural analysis and computational fluid dynamics across all industry segments. Users predict that these and other emerging HPC/CAE applications will experience a dramatic 46 percent growth over the next year alone.

"SGI solutions such as high-performance computing and visualization for CAE simulations provide essential benefits for advanced product development in the manufacturing industry," explained Stan Posey, director of manufacturing industry development for SGI. "The most profitable manufacturing companies worldwide are among those who invest in SGI technology and acknowledged CAE industry leadership."

For CAE applications, SGI continues its industry leadership with solutions, products and services that are uniquely suited to the challenges of manufacturing product development. The SGI(tm) Origin(tm) 3000 server series, SGI(tm) Onyx 3000 series and Silicon Graphics Octane2(tm) workstation offer high-performance computation and visualization capabilities for the most demanding CAE applications.
