SGI TO PROVIDE HIGH-PERFORMANCE VISUAL SYSTEMS FOR US ARMY AVCATT-A.SGI (SGI, Sunnyvale, CA, www.sgi.com) A manufacturer of workstations and servers, founded in 1982 by Jim Clark. The company was founded as Silicon Graphics, Inc., but changed to its acronym in 1999. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : SGI) announced that it will provide its advanced high-performance visual computing equipment and servers to power the Army's new Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer-Aviation Reconfigurable Manned Simulator (AVCATT-A) for Lot 1. AVCATT-A, which is based on the "one Army, one simulator" concept, will provide a realistic, high-intensity virtual combat training environment for the Army and the National Guard's full suite of attack, reconnaissance and utility helicopters. The image generator for each AVCATT-A Helicopter simulator is comprised of a dual-rack Silicon Graphics Onyx supercomputer and deskside SGI Origin 2000 server. With the SGI image generator, the AVCATT-A simulators can provide fully correlated, out-the-window and sensor-based imagery and create a wide range of simulated conditions that include battlefield smoke; blowing snow; dust or sand; and temperature, wind, visibility and cloud ceiling. All simulated conditions can be replicated under day, dusk or night environments. This reconfigurable helicopter simulator program will provide high-fidelity cockpits for the AH-64A AH-64A Apache Attack Helicopter, A Version Apache, AH-64D AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopter, D version, with Longbow radar improvements Longbow longbow Leading missile weapon of the English from the 14th century into the 16th century. Probably of Welsh origin, it was usually 6 ft (2 m) tall and shot arrows more than a yard long. A contract option exists that will incorporate the Army's next-generation attack helicopter, the RAH-66 Comanche. These transportable helicopter simulators will be networked and interoperate with the Army's other Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT) programs, supporting a fully integrated, realistic training environment. The AVCATT-A's virtual training environment supports simulated interactive combat. It will integrate directly into the Army's command, control, communications, computers and intelligence systems, enabling staff working at administrative and tactical operations centers to control battlefield support elements and combat forces participating in a simulated engagement.
