SETTLE NAMED SMC CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Keith W. Settle, 52, has been named appointed to Office of the Chairman and named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Standard Management Corporation ("SMC") (NASDAQ: SMAN), according to an announcement made today by Ronald D. Hunter, chairman of the board of the insurance holding company. Settle's responsibilities will include all operations nationally and internationally along with technology and data processing.
 Prior to joining SMC, Settle served in many capacities within the insurance industry, most recently as president and chief operating officer of PALLM, Inc. (Packaged Automated Life/Liability Management, Inc.), a multi-national software company specializing in insurance. Previously he was division manager for Policy Management Systems Corporation in Columbia, S.C. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president for John Deere Insurance Company of Moline, Ill., vice president for American Reserve in Chicago, and with Allstate Insurance Company.
 In making the announcement, Hunter called attention to Settle's extensive background in insurance operations. "SMC is fortunate to attract a person with the broad skill level and background Keith Settle offers. His abilities will help move SMC into the forefront of innovative technologies for our management information systems."
 A native of Missouri, Settle attended George Washington University. He continued his education at Wharton School of Business in the Annual Executive Continuing Education Program and at Life Underwriters Training Council and was graduated from Purdue University Pension and Sharing School. He was a Registered Principal in the National Association of Security Dealers.
 Settle is married and the father of four children.
