How they'll be judged historically depends heavily on their performance at Saturday's state meet at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Mead of Spokane, Wash., ran 77 minutes, 22 seconds in 1993, an average of 15:28 per scoring runner, and went on to win the national title that year. ``Royal has the firepower fire·pow·er n. 1. The capacity, as of a weapon, weapons system, military unit, or position, for delivering fire. 2. The ability to deliver fire against an enemy in combat. Noun 1. to make a run at that record,'' said Richard Gonzalez, editor of dyestatcal.com, a Web site dedicated to prep cross country in California. The Highlanders, who won the Southern Section Div. I championship last weekend, will have favorable conditions for a record run. Poor weather is usually a factor in late November, but it's expected to be 65 degrees with some clouds on race day. Royal has already set course records at Woodbridge of Irvine and Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. Mt. in Walnut, two of the country's four largest invitationals. ``It is the best measuring stick,'' Gonzalez said of the course. ``It's a much more consistent course (over the years), and all the top teams run there in top shape.'' The Woodbridge Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al adj. Restricted to invited participants: an invitational golf tournament. n. An event, especially a sports tournament, restricted to invited participants. Adj. 1. has been run 25 times, and its course has remained virtually unchanged, but it takes place early in the season, before teams peak. Mt. SAC is one of the country's most historic courses, but it has undergone major renovations in recent years. Royal, despite missing one of its top runners, ran a record 76:22 at the Mt. SAC Invitational - 47 seconds faster than Thousand Oaks' time in 1994, considered the course's standard of excellence. Gonzalez estimates Mt. SAC runs 90 seconds faster per team because of recent renovations. Using that conversion, Royal's time is 43 seconds behind Thousand Oaks' mark. (2) In programming, the asterisk or "star" symbol (*) means multiplication. For example, 10 * 7 means 10 multiplied by 7. The * is also a key on computer keypads for entering expressions using multiplication. . Thousand Oaks also holds the state-meet record. It ran 77:59 in 1993, second to Mead on the Woodward Park all-time list. Thousand Oaks' 1994 team was even faster, but poor weather kept it from setting the Woodward Park mark. It's impossible to compare either to Gonzalez's pick as the best team in state history. Lompoc High's 1972 team featured the state mile and 2-mile champions. Its fifth runner was a 9:20 two-miler, a time that would have placed in the top 10 at this year's state track meet. That Braves team ran before the state meet existed and at a time the Mt. SAC race was run on a different course. Royal ran at Woodward Park earlier this year, posting 79:56 at the Clovis Invitational, more than 2:30 behind Mead's mark. The Highlanders were without three varsity runners and trained rigorously through most of their early-season meets. Their season-opening performance at Woodbridge put the Woodward Park mark in the team's sights. It was a race Luce almost missed after attending a wedding earlier in the day. Royal's seven runners were separated by less than a minute, its scoring five by only 35 seconds. ``That's the key to fast times,'' Luce said about his team's tight pack. Royal will run next week at Nike Team Nationals NTN emblem Nike Team Nationals (NTN) is an invitational cross country meet that serves as the unofficial team national championship of United States high school cross country. It was designed to heighten competition between high school cross country teams nationwide. . Last year, Luce said the race was ``icing on the cake.'' The Highlanders will be one of the favorites to win this year. ``I feel that if we take down the state course record ... that will give us the extra boost to win the national title,'' said Royal's Jun Reichl.
