Watching from below were U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Woodland Hills, Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

Chick, with the help of Riordan and others, secured about $3.5 million in earthquake recovery funds to rebuild the 499-seat theater and beautify sidewalks and light fixtures along Sherman Way.

``This is truly a love-in,'' Chick called out to the audience. ``This is a community theater and it's a tribute to all of you and to artists not just in the San Fernando Valley but all over the city.''

Riordan praised Chick's persistence.

``After the earthquake she said, `Dick, I don't want to physically threaten you but we're going to make this theater come back as a real theater,' '' the mayor joked.
